I remember the weekend they went to roll the new Hanger Lane bridge into place, I was night duty as a guard and me and my mate were sleet duties at Upminster, we did our bit - Upminster to Whitechapel, back to barking sidings, out onto the east and back to Upminster and finish then do the same before start of traffic. We got to Upminster and the Yardmaster told us that it was so cold that night that they had to cancel rolling the bridge into place at Hanger Lane because the bearings had frozen solid. Now that must have been cold

Now that must have been cold I brought this up with a colleague recently who was involved with this job. He recalled that the hydraulic fluid in the jacks froze and that the snow was so deep that P-way couldn't find their tools to reinstate the track over the new bridge. Eventually it was finished the first train to attempt to cross derailed.
