Without wishing to rattle a few cages with the old and new debate. Surely these pics show the modern image looks a lot neater than the old one.

What looks noticable to me is the train set numbers have 9's in them. It looks strange to me even though this went on for a long time. Does anyone know when the current scheme (where 8's and 9's are excluded) started?

when computers and programme machines came about as you cannot have a 9 on a programme machine as the fingers are 200,100,40,20,10,4,2,1

That first Piccy photo was taken at Ruislip, not Rayners Lane. Does anyone notice the "Ruislip" roundel on the other platform? Also, I have seen this picture at www.ruislip.co.uk

WOW! What fantastic photos espeically the colour ones! There is a great mix of trains at Northfields. It is interesting that the 56 and 59 stock trains also carry tail lamps.

The photo of the west end showing 5 different stocks was taken around the time I arrived at Northfields. We were trained on Standards, 38s and 56/59s but not on the CP, Q and R Stock as I was a Picc man. The real difficulty for a new starter then was to remember the difference between "car stock" and "unit stock", as the failures were handled differently.

TP will confirm but I am certain that the Standard Stock converted at ...Eastleigh was it?...was delivered by rail to Fratton and then roaded across to Freshwater. The 40 Lansing/EE trains were sent along the main line for testing after overhaul at Eastleigh.

The IoW Standard Stock was converted at Acton with further work being done at Stewarts Lane. The 1938 Tube Stock on the IoW (the current trains) were done at Eastleigh.
Full details in "Tube Trains on the Isle of Wight" published by Capital Transport.
