Strengthening of Covered Way Tunnels CW12 & CW58 Kensington High Street/Earls Court to modern Highway Loading Standards under Kelso Place. The work was carried out in 1999 during a 9 week suspension of the Circle line. Covered Way CW58 Cast Iron Beams, brickwork jack arches and abutment walls. Erection of steel Aerofoil beams. Coring into brickwork tunnel abutments/footings. Boring of raking piles under tunnel footings to minimise settlement. Covered Ways CW12 & 58 run along each other and track, drainage and piling works were carried out concurrently during seperate occupations of the Circle (CW58) and District lines (CW12). Beam erection was done during engineering hours. The District line had to be maintained during suspension of Circle line services. Cross over switches at were installed so that District services could be diverted over to the Circle line as LUL implemented an extensive re-time tabling of services. The track bed was lowered to improve tunnel headroom clearance. The new track form had resilient track base plates to reduce vibration for local residents and to reduce risk of damage to two existing cast iron sewer pipes which run under the track.

LU move customers from A to B, they used to do it via 'C'.

Nice shots, and an interesting post mate. I was a DMT on the C&H when the covered way 58 work commenced, it was nothing but trouble for us operationally. I still shudder at the mere thought! Thanks for starting the thread.

It was thanks to the CW58 that I got my job on the District as a train op. Earls Court was known as little Morden for a while as 23 of us guard motormen were brought in from the Northern and promoted to Train ops proper to cover the operational problems that were half expected.
