Apparently, while Liverpool Street mainline is closed for 10 days over Christmas (ELL extension work), the Central line off peak service is to be increased from 24tph to 30tph.
Surely, 24tph will be enough to cope, bearing in mind that traffic levels around Xmas and New Year are lower anyway, and a lot of city office are either closed or are operating with a skeleton staff.
Still, will be interesting to see whether a 30tph all day service can be maintained - or is the 30tph only going to run during the busier times of day?

I think the Central will cope quite well with a 30tph service, although a good standard of platform/general station management will be really important at Stratford. There's gonna be a lot of extra people................

The staff there really aren't helped by the station layout  |

That's true but the rail frequency between Stratford and Liverpool St (even off peak) is very high. Cut that out and you'd need to replace that capacity somehow. Also consider that at that time of year (or indeed any shopping period) the route to the west end via the central line is quite busy anyway and you see the need for the extra trains. Jubilee and Victoria lines are likely to feel it too. |

They will probably reverse in the centre platform at Leytonstone and run all ex-Newbury Park and ex-Woodford trains via platform 3.

Signalling is not really the limiting factor at 30tph. The Central line operates 30tph am peak westbound and pm peak eastbound, although not for the whole of the peak period. The line does this pretty well when there is no disruption, and there are plently of reversing points. Eastbound in the pm peak, they alternate between Epping line and Hainault line. The Hainault branch mainly terminate at Hainault, with some going on to Woodford round the loop, and a few which terminate at Newbury Park. On the Epping line, they alternate between Epping itself and Dedben / Loughton. I doubt if the 30tph service will simply be the existing off peak 24tph service with 6 extra trains per hour reversing at Leytonstone. Probably will be an Epping every 6 minutes, a Hainault every 6 minutes (with every 3rd train to Woodford), and a Newbury Park / Loughton every 6 minutes (alternating). That would give 30 tph. I could, of course, be totally wrong! |

According to TFL publiciity, the Central line will be running a Monday to Friday service next Thursday and Friday. This is at odds with the earlier statement that 30tph would be provided throughout the closure of Liverpool Street mainline station. However, it doesn't say whether it's a normal M-F serivice, or an enhanced one.

Did anyone else notice that all the TfL publicity said that Liverpool St would close from the 23rd when in fact it closed today the 22nd.Bet that peed off the punters.

Saturday all Metro trains were terminating at Stratford and the notice in the booking hall had 23rd crossed out and 22nd substituted.

That's odd! Even the "One" railway publicity mentions 23rd! Was it just the Metro services that were disrupted on the Saturday then?

I can tell you Liverpool Street didn't close on the 22nd, because I got the 1630 to Norwich from there.   |

It's been quite busy at Stratford over the past couple of days, but the Central seems to have coped with the extra passengers. However, on Thursday, the Central had a bad day with numerous signal failures, which meant that it was operating with "minor delays" for most of the day. During the evening peak, signalling codes were lost completely in the Holborn area, causing a ten minute shutdown, and thus moving the line into the "severe delays" category. During this, I was at Oxford Circus when the driver announced the problem. He was an amusing chap, who said the following:
"You may be aware that this line is run by computers. Some of you may remember the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64. Well, they both had more processing power than the computers we use to run the Central line! If any of you has a laptop, would you mind bringing it to the cab? We'll plug it in, and see if that makes any difference!"
As you can imagine, that got a few laughs! I won't reveal the train number or destination, as I don't want the driver getting into trouble with scrooge spirited LUL for having a sense of humour and cheering up passengers (we all know what happened to poor Emma Clarke!)
Friday, however, and the line ran a normal service without a hitch. This is just as well, as there were more passengers than on Thursday, although far less than the average weekday.
