This article 3s.thalesgroup.com/press/pr_view.php?id=413 explains that the contract for the Piccadilly Line's new signalling has gone to Thales, who recently took over Alcatel's signalling group. Thus the Piccadilly Line will be getting Seltrac S40 moving block signalling, which is being installed on the Jubilee and Northern Lines, and is already in use on many metro systems including the DLR.

Well, at least aetearlscourt's JNP-land colleagues won't have to learn more than one signalling system...

On the downside it will have the same signalling as the Jubilee, and even more worryingly, the Northern! Seriously, although the Picc does need modernisation at signalling level, the track record of the system they wish to implement doesn't fill me with confidence!

I wonder how the two new signalling systems will interface between Acton Town and Ealing Common, Rayners Lane to Uxbridge and all the other places on the system where they have to work together. The JNP will have S40 signalling while the District/Met will have DTG-R. I suppose they will have to make them talk to each other. What a potential nightmare, particularly as Westinghouse and Alcatel are bitter rivals and won't want to tell each other how their systems work.

Please try and get your facts right before posting. The Piccadilly's to be installed Seltrac S40 signalling system (which is presently being installed on the Jubilee and Northern Lines) has an excellent track record in proven service in over 20 metro systems including the DLR, Hong Kong KCR and MTR, JFK Air Train, and Vancouver Skytrain. The "logical block" version, S30 is also presently being installed on Paris Line 13. It is by far the most proven and successful CBTC signalling system available on the market.

Hong Kong MTR have managed to interface an Alstom SACEM, and Alcatel Seltrac S40 signalling system on the same tracks to allow the HK Disneyland Line trains to access their depot on the Tung Chung Line. So it is technically possible.

Alstom and Alcatel were the same company until about 2000 though, so there might be rather more compatability there than Alstom/Westinghouse...

This article www.tsd.org/cbtc/ (scroll down to signal supplier scorecard), which gives a reasonable history of each suppliers signalling system seems to differ from your opinion.

To say "your opinion" is a bit strong - it's a fact that Alcatel and Alstom were the same company, but I didn't claim to know anything about the history of signalling systems...

Sorry, I didn't mean to cause offense. What I meant, was that despite the companies being combined for some time, the signalling divisions were quite seperate, and developed very different technologies. Thales have taken over from Alcatel for the resignalling of the Jubilee, Northern & Piccadilly lines. That was mentioned in the first post in this thread

the interface will be a nightmare and as the district is the last to be re-signalled time will only tell
