Today marks the Bakerloo's 100th birthday!

There will be a special event held at Baker St today to celebrate the event.

Edwardian Tube passengers will be at Baker Street station to celebrate 100 years of the Bakerloo Line.

London Underground's Tim O'Toole will join the costumed commuters on Friday to present a Bakerloo Centenary commemorative plaque.

Actors and staff in Edwardian dress will go on to entertain commuters as they travel on the trains.

The station opened on 10 March 1906 and initially ran between Baker Street and Lambeth North.

Originally known as the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway, the name was officially changed in July 1906 to the Bakerloo Railway reflecting a nickname coined by the Evening News.

Service withdrawn

The Bakerloo Line was extended from Baker Street to Queen's Park in 1915 and further north over existing suburban railway tracks to Watford Junction by 1917.

In 1939, a new-tunnelled section was built from Baker Street to Finchley Road, which allowed Bakerloo trains to take over the Metropolitan line's service, originally started in 1932, to Stanmore.

In 1982, the service beyond Queen's Park to Watford Junction, by then only four peak period trains, was withdrawn

It's a shame they didn't get the LT museum's 1938 stock unit out as it hasn't been used since the Uxbridge Centenarian and it would nice to have it runing in between the morning and evening peak hours, there could have been two trips from Queen's Park to Elephant & Castle and back. If they could get it out for the Uxbridge branch then why not the Bakerloo line, why bother restoring somthing and then not using it?

Funny you should mention this....

I've just received an email from a colleague (and also a member of this forum) so I hope he won't be offended that I've nicked his mail!

It reads......

"Today is the 100th anniversary of the start of passenger service on the
Bakerloo line. I know this because, walking through oxo this afternoon, i
had to swerve to avoid Mr Kilius Smith who was gushing with beaming
bonhomie, and in my avoiding manouvre, i happened upon some woman dressed in
Edwardian costume who gave me a little badge with an Elephant on it.
Whoopeee! (OK, the badge didnt really have a elephant on it, otherwise it
wouldnt have been little, and even I would have been unable to wear such a
heavy badge. I meant a logo of an elephant).

Anyway, I asked some chap by the name of Jeff Dent, performance manager,
Bakerloo (obviously got his work cut out there) what else was planned for
the year, and he said that he was planning to run a railtour on the bakerloo
using the musuem's 1938 stock. He stressed that planning was at the very
earliest stages, but he was hoping that a trip could be run on Saturday
August 5th. It would be a ticket only trip, open to the general public but
bookable in advance. He recommended that I keep an eye out on the tfl
webshite for further developments.

Now if there are any sad trainspotters out there (As I know there are, but
no need to put up your hands, your secret is safe with me) or
'Preservationists' (Uncle Bob?) or whatever you like to call yourselves this
week, be warned that there is a potential jolly in the offing.

Well I take the Lakerboo every day and I only realised when the new stickers onthe trains went up!

I noticed the 1906 - 2006 stickers too the other day. I take it a few lines will have them soon as the Yerkes lines all opened quite closely to each other.
