from the TfL website: www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/press-centre/press-releases/press-releases-content.asp?prID=804"An empty northern line train derailed at very low speed as it entered Archway sidings this morning. No passengers were on board the train and no one was injured. "The incident happened at 10.51am. "The Northern Line is partly suspended from Camden Town to East Finchley. A rail replacement bus service is operating through that area. "An investigation has been launched and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) is at the scene . "The suspension will be in place for the remainder of the day and is expected to be in place tomorrow. A further service update will be issued as more information becomes available."

Was at work at the time, I have been told by the s/s on duty at the time that a train left the n/b platform and was entering the reversing siding and the last two cars then derailed on the points. There is the possibility that ******************

After waitng 10 mins at Euston CX southbound this evening - gave up when the next train board announced Morden 14 mins - truly a record in my experience of the line .....that equates to a 24 min headway........was this a C

Unfortunately no news about whats happening tomorrow regarding what service will be running. There was meant to be a Charing Cross branch closure this weekend...and if that goes ahead along with the emergency shutdown, there will be two big suspensions all in one go.
Suspending the service Camden Town - East Finchley is one of the most disruptive scenarios for a Northern Line service. The train crew depot at East Finchley becomes stranded from the rest of the line. Then the train frequencies on the trunk Bank and CX branches have to be fairly cut, because they all combine together to form a too high frequency in the bottleneck Camden Town - Golders Green (as the trains can't run onto the Barnet branch)

Strange that the suspension is going on so long. I thought they usually had them re-railed in a couple of hours. Presumably it's torn up a fair bit of infrastructure, but that's surprising at low speed.

the e.r.u boys ive no doubt will be working hard this evening ;D ;D
apparently cars 1,2,3 and 4 went across the points towards the sidings, cars 5 +6 decided they wanted to go to highgate
there was a track failure near the points so the driver is not to blame , this part of the track was booked for ultrasonic testing tonight

Well it looks like the Northern line through Archway has reopened this morning.

Oh dear. Is Archway SDG used frequently, ie once a day or more often... This is going to be a grand headache to the Northern Line....nothing is scheduled in the timetable to reverse in Archway. In reality though, Archway siding is used almost everyday on numerous occassions to turnaround late trains to recover some late running. I say this based on anecdotal travels on the Northern Line (seeing Archway trains alot), as well as speaking to other members of staff. Ironically, from July, there will be several weekend closures on the Northern Line between East Finchley and Camden Town. So hopefully these closures can be used to help speed up the reinstallation of Archway sidings.

Yes agree with Soultrain a certain number turn round at Archway, paticularly late morning/afternoon. I can see with the siding being unavailable, the late running will only escalate, I would imagine Finchley Central will take some of the strain.

Have noticed since this incident happened, many trains are running over the points under full acceleration. Obviously there is a tsr over the points, some trains have been doing 5mph as the train op tonight at 2120 did, others 10mph, but most just ignore the points altogether, and accelerate up to the normal line speed [40mph]

Anyone know or have a rough idea when Archway siding will be brought back to use, if the design of the points was the problem, then it could be a while.

Archway siding has been used for at least a month I think.

Interesting report. I am surprised to see that Archway's V frame was supposedly installed in 1992 - I thought the last new V frame on the Underground was at Waterloo in 1991.

But the cause was? Or is it undetermined? The right-hand switch rail snapped in two due to a fatigue crack exacerbated by poor switch rail design.

the crack was caused by a frequently occuring phenomenon during rolling processes
