Quickie question time.
Passing loops on the Edgware extension...I can't seem to find out much (if indeed anything) about them. Anyone care to share?

There were two passing loops at Brent Cross, controlled by signalbox 'AA'. They were removed because of the complexity they introduced to the timetable and the fact that they were too short; any time saved by non-stopping the station via the loops was too small to make their presence worthwhile.
When CSLR sees this thread he may provide more info.

When CSLR sees this thread he may provide more info. Brent Cross was not on the C&SLR. It was one of the bits that got strapped onto it at a later date by that damned company that took over the railway and then started chopping it around

Speaking of loops...was there one, or even two, "sidings" on the Central which would have been on the eastern side of the line? I remember that we went through one or two on the Auto-Tube Rambler in 1980? I had never been on that line before so never knew that there was a "siding"...it was accessible from both ends. I wonder if it was at Woodford? It was certainly before the junction for the loop as we went round the top of the loop in auto mode.

There used to to be an east & west loop between Leyton & Leytonstone.

The western loop is still there; I think it was modified after the resignalling of Leytonstone to provide two w/b tracks, to allow trains to vacate the platforms for services running behind.

That must be it! Thanks. We went through both I think, one in one direction and the other in the other direction.

They were removed because of the complexity they introduced to the timetable and the fact that they were too short; any time saved by non-stopping the station via the loops was too small to make their presence worthwhile. Another reason was that they prevented the platforms being lengthened to take 9-car trains. These were seen as being more worthwhile than the marginal benefit of the loops, which were only used for a few peak-hour trains.

Ahhh. Interesting. I'd assumed the stations were all built with 9 cars in mind. I noticed that Burnt Oak seems to only have room for a loop on the SB - if indeed it ever had one?
On another tangent, do you think if the Express tubes had been built we'd of had some crazy service running using said loops and tubes?

When the Edgware Line was built space was provided for a Loop on either side of the Plattform at Brent and on the Southbound side at Colindale, (I'm not sure about Burnt Oak). The Loops at Brent were brought into use in 1927 for a train to overtake another one in the Platform and were taken out of use in about 1935 - perhaps after traffic had built up at the other stations. No extra track was installed in the space at Colindale. I think Brent was the only place on the 'Tube' lines that had timetabled overtaking. Met. (and District?) did have.
"One of the bits that got strapped on" -indeed !!! :-(

Brent Passing Loops.
According to"Rails Through the Clay" the Passing loops at Brent (Cross) were brought into use on 13th,June,1927 and were last used on 22nd, Aug, 1936. They were used by only one train in each direction daily - 0856 from Edgware, express to Golders Green and passing Mornington Crescent and Warren St. and the 1712 from Tooting, passing the previous train at Brent.
We do not know what delights the planners had intended for us but it seems a rather expensive installation for just two trains. :-)
