I've noticed that trains approaching stations north of Kings Cross show "Morden via Bank" but at KX and south of there, they show just "Morden" as the destination. Can anyone tell me, what triggers the change?

A PTI reset, no doubt, probably at Euston s/b and Mornington Crescent s/b. Either that or the T/Op does it himself.

It's picked up via a Track - Train Transponder, or summat like that...

if the train can track what station it is at, DVA, surely one of the computers can be set to change at Kings Cross. It would be interesting to see if an incorrectly set DVA would not make the destination change, or it is a track transponder.

Okay, interesting point is that if you forget to do the PTI reset at say Totteridge Northbound and don't do it, on the southbound run, it will say the station, but will still announce High Barnet as a destination...

The code for the destination sent from the computer at Cobourg does not change but the sign controllers on the Cross and City branch are not able to show via xxx only the destination.

Some S/B trains have High Barnet on the DVA as far as East Finchley!

So, forgive my ignorance, where are the "sign controllers"? Are they loops, transponders or similar which transmit data to the train or is it built into the on-board visual announcement software?

There are two loops, which were installed for the 95 stock. One is located in the tunnel/outside roughly 30secs on the approach to a station. This send information to the train such as the "next station is...", De-icing equipment on/off etc
The second loop is located under the platform edge adjacent to the front car. This sends information regarding the announcement, train destination displays, correct side door enable etc.
It is this loop most probably at king's cross which changes the display and announcement from via bank to just morden/kennington etc.
These loops should not be mistaken with the old track PTI equipment, which was installed in the 80's for the current dot matrix system.

There's not really much point in showing via Charing X or via Bank if you're on the actual branch, because presumably you know where you are, you can't be on the X branch if you're at Bank and vice versa.
The exception is Euston because there are Bank and CharingX branch platforms which is why its starts saying Morden from King's X on the S/B.
There is no reset done by the T/OP it must be just how the Platform Train Indicators are set up.

Yes you are right in saying the train op does not change the display/announcement.
On reading my thread above you will find out that the loop under the platform does this automatically. Simple hey.

Whilst on this topic, it's quite noticeable that "the next station is..." announcements don't always kick in. On topic with the original thread (maybe??), the N/B Bank branch service from Kennington does not announce "the next station is Elephant & Castle", regardless of which Celia it is. Also, I've also noticed that a S/B train approaching Brent Cross doesn't announce its next destination either. Just a quirk of the system maybe...?

Another interesting thing is trains approaching Edgware -- the DVA usually shows the next trip the train will be making, often allowing the awaiting passengers a more reliable indication than that on the platform indicators.
