I read in this weeks TC (3) that North Greenwich is going to be closed to passengers next weekend for "escalator demolition".
Anyone know the story behind this? Are they expanding or altering the station, or has one of the escalators outlived its' lifespan already?!

Are they expanding or altering the station, or has one of the escalators outlived its' lifespan already?! When North Greenwich station opened in May 1999 this station had two full-length escalators and one escalator which only went up about half way from the lower landing. As part of a congestion relief scheme, the short escalator was taken out of use on 26 October 2005 for removal, its parts will be used as spares. North Greenwich will be closed for this work on 21st and 22nd January 2006. The purpose of the short escalator has eluded most people including me !

Much obliged, DWS!
I used to have most of my meal breaks at North Greenwich when I was on the Jubilee, but I forgot all about that single escalator!

Anyone got a picture of it? I'd pop over and take a look myself, except I'm not in town next until the end of the month...
