Why is there a facing crossover at London Bridge Jubilee, as opposed to a trailing crossover?

Why is there a facing crossover at London Bridge Jubilee, as opposed to a trailing crossover? Rumour has it that the original signalling was to have incorporated stretches of bi-directional signalling and the facing crossover was to facilitate this. What practical use this would have had is unclear.

The layout is all wrong for west to east reversing as it holds up both roads while the move is taking place, not so bad the other way as the reversing train can run straight into the westbound platform.

Indeed. Personally I would have thought that a double-length central reversing siding to the east of the station with a facing connection to the westbound line in the middle would have been a much more flexible and useful choice.
