I understand this run takes place once a week?
Just interested to know why the run takes place?
Is it just to keep crew knowledge over the section or do they tend to send sick stock for some heavy work?
Do they send a different train back to New Cross so the first train gets a stretch over the Met or does the same unit end up going back to New Cross?
Does the train run in passenger service or as an empty movement?
Last thing (promise) does anyone have the times for the trip?
Kind Regards
Tom C

I understand this run takes place once a week? Train 177 is booked to run about 3 times a day running between New Cross Depot & Neasden Depot. The move takes place so that the 4 car units of A stock that operate the ELL can go back to Neasden for any heavy maintanence or Exams that need to take place as New Cross only deal with minor, day to day problems with the stock. The train runs out of service, the train operator is accompanied (or at least was) by an ELL Duty Line Manager, their equivilant of a Duty Manager Trains. Hope that helps Tom........

Is the DLM required to make sure the Train Operator does not take the wrong route at Aldgate East ;D

Is the DLM required to make sure the Train Operator does not take the wrong route at Aldgate East ;D That i beleive is one of the reasons. There ae quite a few places where a wrong signal can be accepted on this little tour from New Cross to Neasden. However i dont see why the Train Op needs someone tohold his / her hand!

it was and think still is that the train in the evening about 23:00ish is a 4 car unit and when it comes back around 07:30ish the following morning its a 8 car train (2x 4 car unit) the paths during the day are usually cancelled unless a train has major fault
the funnist one i have heard was when a A stock made it all the way to temple on the w/b before he realised he was on the wrong line

Composition of the train and whether it runs on all it's paths is very much a day-by-day thing. I have seen numerous 8-car transfers in the evening. Going by aetearlscourt's theory, the ELL must be over-run with trains. If each morning they get given an 8-car and the only other trip (if the midday paths are cancelled) is a 4-car back, imagine how many trains they have now ;D The drivers also arrive at Aldgate East either with or without company in the cab. It is very rare for the stock to take a wrong turn at Aldgate East. In fact it has only happened once in recent years. Cue my learned colleague..... ;D

I thought bits of the southern side of the circle were such areas (probably wrong).

From Clive's guide to the Circle Line (usual discalimers apply):
# A stock in passenger service may only operate between Aldgate and Edgware Road, and must use the central platforms at the latter. Coupled units may run empty between High Street Kensington and Embankment, and single units may run empty between Edgware Road and Mansion House.
