Following some previous test runs, from mid-May 2008, C Stock is now authorised to run empty between Barking and Upminster. This is for C Stock units that need attention on Upminster's new wheel lathe. Until now, C Stock needing wheel attention has gone to Neasden.

I thought Hammersmith depot did all the "heavy" work for C stock.

I thought Hammersmith depot did all the "heavy" work for C stock. Whilst Hammersmith is responsible for the majority of maintenance on C stock, overhauling of various parts is carried out elsewhere, usually REW at Acton (the former Acton Works). This included wheel sets, as there is no wheel lathe at Hammersmith. As a result the cars would need to be lifted, bogies removed, wheels removed and replaced with new/reprofiled ones, bogies replaced, cars available for service again. The removed wheels would then go to REW by lorry for reprofiling, before being returned, again by lorry to Hammersmith. The new wheel lathe at Upminster, as with the one at Neasden, removes the need for removing the wheels at all, as the lathe works on the wheels whilst they are still fitted to the cars, thus making the whole process quicker and easier, thus also cheaper.

ASLEF have been making noises about the C stock transfers to Upminster, saying that test crews shouldn't be driving them and that the work should be in the hands of LU drivers! They've even put out a request to report sightings of the planned transfer last Tuesday (dunno quite what they planned to do on receipt of the said sightings ;D) - in any case it must have happened cos I've just seen unit 5709 on 32 road at Upminster. Dunno where the other 4 cars were though As there is also a C stock train at Ealing Common depot, I'm surprised there aren't cancellations on the Circle/H&C due to stock shortage....

I believe there are at least 2 cancelled every day in the peaks for no stock.

I believe there are at least 2 cancelled every day in the peaks for no stock. Then they should change the timetable! I didn't know so much C stock was out of service that 2 trains would be cancelled.

No; it's just keeping up with tradition. Lots of old WTTs have trains enumerated that can be cancelled at the controllers whim.

In days of yore the Central WTT went the other way,listing trains not to be cancelled unless there were exceptional cicumstances.T69 was one 07:42 Hainault Depot till 09:05 Ruislip Depot,as it was the second "shed day" train.

Well the InfraCo (Metronet) are contractually obliged to offer a certain number of trains for service each day, as per the timetable. LUL pay for this service through the Infrastructure Service Charge. When the InfraCo fail to do what they should, they pay a penalty. The presence of a penalty should act as an incentive for the InfraCo to do their bit. There are/were! enough trains but some outside (as well as controllable) factors to sometimes mean that trains are cancelled. And yes there are days where all trains are offered for service, when there are cancellations due to no stock, it usually covers up for there being no driver! ;D
