Well, I've now had a reply from Kit Malthouse's office about the questions I asked (somewhere upthread but I'm darned if I can find the post ) - I'm promised he's going to look into it as matter of urgency... when he gets back from his holiday

Will Praed Street junction stand the strain?

slightly O/T but I have never understood why there is not an emergency X-over at Mile End, and even more important now with the Whitechapel remodeling. At least getting westbound districts to Mile End in the event of service disruption gives customers a viable alternative route into the city via the Central. personally i would have thought that funding for the West Ham Siding would be better spent here and any associated traction current gaps required to maintain a service. By doing this if there was a shut down at say around the Aldgate/Aldgate East Junctions, then your Eastbound service reverses at Tower Hill and your Westbound At Mile End and passenger can use the central between Mile End and Bank and back to the Disitrict at monument (bit of a walk admitely) this also gives a link into the Circle/hammersmith services at Liverpool St ( added that bit to get back on topic LOL ;D).

I see, but at West Ham there is room for a central reversing siding, so trains can be kept out of the way without blocking others.

Reversing facilities are available at Bromley-by-Bow, so the Jubilee from West ham is an option....

In the past week I have twice noticed C stock Whitechapel reversers on the central side of the e/b platform while D stock up Upminster pass on the outer side. This is the opposite of what usually happens (and caused a fair deal of confusion amogn regulars). Is this the start of a pattern change in anticipation of the T-Cup or just a coincidence?

It does happen reasonably regularly, its up to the signalman and evens out wear on points/crossings etc.
There has been no other recent timetable change to anticipate the 13 December alteration.

It can also easily occur if, for example, there are two H&C reverser's on the bounce.
First H&C terminates in platform 1, second H&C terminates in platform 2 - one of them must now leave before a District can run through Eastbound. So the first H&C leaves platform 1 thus freeing up a platform for the next Eastbound District.
Once this has happened, it can easily mean H&C's end up using platform 2 and District's platform 1 until the signaller gets an opportunity to swap the working back to the usual platforms.

Interesting, thank you for taking the trouble to explain.
I suppose there will be a lot of wasted platform at Whitechapel when the timetable changes, but on the plus side more choice for me getting home e/b...

The service is being changed to the t-cup format, but my understanding is the line will still be known by its existing name. The cynical side of me wonders if this is to minimise on the cost of changing signage, and then the follow-on cost of reinstating all the said signage when the new service turns out to be unworkable because of congestion at Edgware Road.

it should be called the t-cup line so as to draw attention to the service changes in that people will have to change at Edgware rd.
the name circle line has connotations of being never ending which would not go with the new service patten

it should be called the t-cup line so as to draw attention to the service changes in that people will have to change at Edgware rd. But renaming the Circle to the T-cup line would confuse a lot of passengers and tourists, so if the line was renamed it should be something like Hammersmith & Circle, but then people would confuse it with the Hammersmith & City line (and we wouldn't be able to type 'H&C' if we're too lazy to type Hammersmith & City). I think it should stay as Circle, and anyway, there will be a lot of announcements and posters about the service changes so that passengers will know about it. the name circle line has connotations of being never ending which would not go with the new service patten But there once were Middle and Outer Circle services, and they weren't never ending, they were horseshoe shaped.

Its probably happened before, just like the one about that bloke who waited for 2 hours at Dagenham East for an Ealing Broadway train without knowing they start at Tower Hill

There's no helping some people though is there? You could have somebody stood there shouting instructions in their ear and they'd still get it wrong. I met an American in distress at Uxbridge once who had managed to fetch up there instead of Heathrow. By my reckoning he'd passed through 13 stations before Uxbridge without noticing he was on the wrong branch. In the end after having spent some time trying to explain with the aid of the map, how to get there by train, I gave up and pointed him at a mini-cab.

You can't help some people. When doing Tower Hill's, I used to go into details to passengers at Monument to change there instead of walking up the stairs at Tower Hill, only to be asked several times on arrival is this train going to East Ham/ Upton Park ect. I now say nothing and let the DVA give them the basics.

I fully concur with the last two points. Ive spent a lot of time at ruislip over the years, and the number of people that come up bemused and say 'where am i and why arent I at Heathrow' or words to that affect is depressing. Hillingdons transport section of their LIPP mentions the aspiration of extending the Uxb branch through cowley and west drayton back to Heathrow. At least it would sort out the aformentioned problem

Also swapping the District and Picc between Uxbridge and Ealing Broadway would help this as well, as at EBDY they're less far out of their way and can just be pointed in the direction of Heathrow Connect (via a ticket machine).

Forget it Chris! ;D With the American guy I mentioned, even if I'd pointed him towards the Heathrow Connect at EBDY he'd have somehow managed to end up at Hainault............ As far as the Circle extension is concerned I really do feel that there's too much bleak speculation going on before the new system is even given a chance. If it proves to be a dog then they can always change it back again can't they? I've long since given up saying "told you so" when hindsight proves me right as I'm probably wrong (historically) on an equal basis, although funnily enough, I can never remember these occasions!!

Another common mistake is passengers getting a fast Amersham on the Met when they want Preston Road, Northwick Park etc.

Once I was working on the barrier at North Acton and was approached by a family who asked how to get to Greenford. I directed them to platform one and told them take a Northolt, West Ruislip, or Ruislip Gardens train. About 15 or so minutes later they re-appeared from the Eastbound and I asked what went wrong, they said they ended up at Ealing Broadway. Again I directed them to platform 1 and told them to MAKE SURE they got the right train this time. 15 or so minutes later, they appear again! I just went and hid inside .. really does make you wonder how bright people are !
I agree with Jim, I have given up making announcements at monument, I just let the DVA finish then go. When they all start asking me doesn't this go to Mile End? etc.. I just tell them go to platform 3.

I sometimes work as a volunteer at a large arts centre. People regularly ask the way to the bar and I tell them that it is downstairs and point them in the direction of the stairs. Amazing how many stand in the stair well trying to work out which way is down.
Back to the Underground it is always entertaining in the evening rush hour at Chalfont and Latimer seeing if anybody getting off one of the Cheshams then goes to the bay to wait for the shuttle.

In a previous life / employ I have stood in the noticeably chillier frozen food aisle of a major supermarket chain only to be asked where the frozen chips were.
In the animal world, pigeons can find their way back to home, bats can find their way around without ever seeing where they are going, and even a slug can find my cabbage plants without a satnav.
I think, like in the animal world, some are born to survive by being able to exist on their instincts, without so much dumbing down and cotton wool...
...and some are not.
The human race is littered with the latter.

Am I the only person who really, really can't see this idea lasting for long? I'm possibly speaking from a position of ignorance (wouldn't be the first time! ), but I just can't see the passengers understanding the new setup (causing all sorts of headaches for passengers and staff alike) and I'm far from convinced that this won't actually make the line harder to run from an operationa/timetabling pint of view. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's either changed again with 12 months of operating or simply reverts to the original cirlce line route. Or the circle is simply abolished altogether.

I met two American girls a few weekends ago waiting on the Jubilee platform at Finchley Road looking puzzled. Despite 101 signs and repeated announcements that there were none, they'd stood there for an hour waiting for a train.
