People are saying that we don't have the full facts. Personally, I don't care if we do or not.
Some of these yobs who are violent and abusive when using the network deserve a bloody good hiding, and all credit to the staff member who defended himself. I don't give two hoots whether he landed one on the yob. If I was a manager and had seen the CCTV footage and it did show a staff member being a bit, shall we say, over physical, I would turn a blind eye.
Until we stop doing things in favour of the thugs / yobs / criminals, this country will carry on on a downward spiral.
As a teacher, I sympathise. For decades, we have had the power to deal with unruly pupils slowly pulled from under us. But at least we are allowed to use minimum force to restrain unruly pupils and, if necessary, parents.
EDIT: In terms of striking in the teaching profession, no other staff (including people from different unions) can be asked to cover for a striking colleague.

EDIT: In terms of striking in the teaching profession, no other staff (including people from different unions) can be asked to cover for a striking colleague. Out of interest - does this include supply staff (either directly employed, or agency), or cover supervisors (who are technically support staff)?

They won't hire supply staff to cover striking teachers, directly employed or agency. In any case, most supply staff are part of a union anyway, so this would preclude them being asked to cover. Headteachers and other managers may decide to cover in exceptional circumstances i.e. to make sure that an exam went ahead.

Blimey things are getting from bad to worse......I was always under the impression I could stand up for myself if I was in danger....and now it turns out I can't. OK for passengers to hit me though.....makes me really sick, hopefully LU managers will listen to the CHX group and do the sensible thing......... Even when I was a guard on LT we used to have ructions from the public, cant seem to win even if you were polite. Though me being tall even didnt help, but I stood up for myself. However in them days I dont think the violence was as bad, now days driver only on buses and trains must be a nervy experience. I take my hat off to you lads and lasses.
