Is it to do with the number of modes that you can interchange with?

Is it to do with the number of modes that you can interchange with? I was just about to suggest that!

No, not that either. The word interchange is only in the answer, not the answer. Hard to explain, but you'll see when the answer finally comes to surface.

That isn't the answer. Kings Cross would be station D, but you can do something at Kings Cross that means it is not one of these four stations.
SE13's most recent post also contains a subtle clue to the main part of the answer.

Is this something to do with coming to the surface? Once through the gate-line you've got to go upstairs to actually get out?

It's not about the physical characteristics of the station.

The stations are near/under some kind of road interchange?
Old St - The roundabout. Vauxhall - Has a bus station and thus road junctions on top. Knightsbridge - Isn't this under a cross-roads too? Brixton - Is erm.... Doh!

No no, I refer you to my post above. Directly, it's nothing to do with interchanges, though the word does form part of the answer.

There is a list that places all the stations in a particular order. . Alphabetical? Is the word in the answer before "interchanges" perhaps "not"? All four stations are one stop away from an interchange with another Underground Line in one direction and, with the exception of Brixton, two away in the other. Only three of them interchange with NR. Is any of this getting even lukewarm?

slagabed - no.
norbitonflyer - "not interchanges" is most of the second part of the answer.
To make it clear, you need to work out what the list is, and why these four stations were selected from it.
The list is in a specific order, but that order is not alphabetical.

The list is in a specific order, but that order is not alphabetical. Judging by SE13's comment in relation to Old Street, the list is chronological and Old Street is the last in the series. Perhaps?

The list is not chronological, and the stations are in the order they are presented here

[Second Barrel Scrape] Is it to do with the number of Bus Stops related to the station, with the station title on them?

It has nothing at all to do with bus stops.

The list isn't alphabetical nor chronological, but be numerical then?

Is it anything to do with the number of steps from platform to surface or to another "non interchange" station?

Is it anything to do with the number of steps from platform to surface or to another "non interchange" station? Ooooooooooooo, Or the number of escalators/lifts? Though I'm not sure what King's Cross St Pancras has that means Knightsbridge comes in its place. Grrr.

This isn't to do with any physical characteristics of the station buildings The physical characteristics of the station have already been ruled out It's not about the physical characteristics of the station.

Hang about, is this to do with some physical characteristic of each station? ;D
I'm a little confused though; apparently you can do something at King's Cross that means it's not one of these four stations, but the list is not linked to the physical characteristics. Surely if you can do something to rule it out, then it must be linked to some physical characteristic?
We know that part of the answer is "not interchanges". I'm intrigued by the use of the plural...
A non-list member has suggested post-codes, but I don't see how it fits. Considering we've tried most other things it's worth a try!

First postcodes are completely irrelevant. IIRC it's not easy to find the postcodes of LU stations, everything comes back giving you the postcode of 55 Broadway.
Re doing something at Kings Cross, ok you've got me there! It is a physical thing you can do at Kings Cross that you cannot do at these four stations that is why these four stations were selected from the list. Neither the reason for the list, nor its ordering, are related to physical features of the stations.

Travel time from Bradford Interchange?
[modify] think it doesn't fit in with chrism's latest post though
[modify 2] busiest stations without interchanges to other LU lines?
[modify 3] ok not the busiest four non-interchanges... but they are in that order...
