Why has Blackfriars tube station been closed for so long?

Complete rebuilding of the NR/Thameslink station above. The opportunity taken to rebuild the LU station, with escalators from the platforms. Should be finished in December.

The daylight coming into the middle of the platforms is a big clue as to what has been done. For much of the last two years there has been nothing above the platforms and the LU station has been in the middle of a building site. Early on in the works you could even see passing LU trains from Thameslink services passing overhead. This link shows the lack of building above the platform (which are underneath the temporary shield during the rebuild). maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=51.511559,-0.10385&ll=51.511527,-0.103697&spn=0.001197,0.002803&sll=51.511042,-0.103508&sspn=0.006295,0.006295&num=1&t=h&z=19

Well some sort of is being done around the clock in the LU station area. For weeks now hammering and drilling has been heard from slow-moving trains as they coast past, even late at night or very early in the morning. The other morning there was also a strong solvent smell - presumably paint or sealant of some kind.

RE: complaints of no change in the images posted in reply #2 above....
Those images where taken just after the tunnel shield had been removed - you were never going to see any real change as nothing could be done whilst the tunnel shield was in place!!
As stated in the post above this one, work proper has now started on the LU station/platform area (though it's currently covered/protected by scaffolding & sheeting) - all will be revealed in the next few months....

Went through Blackfriars today, after the hoardings were finally removed over the weekend.
Quite a difference now, compared to the earlier pics! - floor tiles almost finished - large white 'Victoria Line' style tiles on walls - false ceiling installed - fire doors to emergency exit visible - overhead signage up but covered - roundels up on platform walls!
Looks as if 18 December will be achievable after all!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the sheeting and scaffolding protecting the workers from passing trains were installed during an engineering possession? Therefore, will it not have to be removed during an engineering possession? I've just checked the six month track closures and there are no closures scheduled of that section of line for any weekend in December.

Thanks for posting the pics! Looks good, though I personally hate the policy of false ceilings everywhere.
Whats happened at the other end, where the 60s platform extensions are?

Whats happened at the other end, where the 60s platform extensions are? Not that much, apart from erect the false ceiling, tiled floors. The '60s pillars look as if they are to be hidden by cladding, as a metal bracing has been attached to them. (it is very dark at that end for photos)

Theres a pic in Follenfant of the area after rebuilding, it looks pretty attractive bare and new. Shooting themselves in the foot though with cladding as the depth between the pillars will presumably be lost. Would have been perhaps of more benefit to instead use the spaces to install bench seating. Think it was RT who commented elsewhere that some platforms on the system have, over the years, lost feet of depth through false walls and cladding. Doesn't seem a great idea if avoidable...

Indeed I did, Embankment District platforms are a prime example of loss of public platform area. Of course at some future time the lost space may well be reclaimed wholly or partially as happened at Liverpool St. Met, Baker St. Met etc and elsewhere such as Baker Street Bakerloo there is a time capsule waiting to be rediscovered behind the 1970s tiling. However, if one looks at most tube platforms many have lost space to end of platform relay rooms and switchrooms over the years though in some places such as at Arsenal and Finsbury Park the old signal cabin space was simply reused. Cut and cover platforms have also had platform space sacrificed to make way for relay rooms and comms equipment rooms such as Euston Square and Sloane Square. If one keeps one's eyes peeled there is much to be seen behind scenes without necessarily having X-ray vision!

Whats happened at the other end, where the 60s platform extensions are? West end of station, showing enamel cladding panels being attached to 1960s platform extension pillars. Lift symbol on frieze, although both C & D Stock (new) line diagrams don't refer to this! tinyurl.com/67oz9xv -WB Platform frieze added over weekend: tinyurl.com/5rl8q7y -EB As with Cannon Street the direction signs to the NR station above show "Blackfriars" rather than the usual "National Rail".

The latest Station Closures pdf now says the Blackfriars closure will end in 'Late Dec 2011'. Minor slippage?

Very warmly welcomed - the congestion in the old station was pretty bad.
The old station was retiled in and around 1978 or so - and was quite cheerfull for the time when many stations were a tad sad - miss the old vending point which did decent filled rolls etc !

The latest Station Closures pdf now says the Blackfriars closure will end in 'Late Dec 2011'. Minor slippage? Well late December is late 2011 so it isn't inconsistent with the original projection. The FCC press release also says that a new ticket hall is opening at Farringdon. They can't have finished it already. When I last saw it in the summer only a couple of bits of structure were up.

They can't have finished it already. Farringdon has weekend closures going on until at least Feb according to TfL. Can only presume this is in part for the new ticket hall and associated works. Anyway, will be great when Blackfrairs re-opens. Combined with the new NR station, a great many journeys from South London and beyond will become a lot easier.

And the step-free access for those who need it. (Logically, since every LU reconstruction project after Angel is step-free)

(Logically, since every LU reconstruction project after Angel is step-free) only few stations can't be have lifts when its was reconstructioned - shephard bush (lift not installed) Lifts were planned at Shepherd's Bush, but due to the excessive costs involved in getting the shafts from the surface to the platforms, they were removed from the rebuild. I'm sure that if the rebuild had included a new platform, then lifts would have been included.

From Network RailReally? I could have sworn there was precious little of the structure at the site back in June. Did they really finish it in 6 months? I'm impressed. Ok on topic. Will Blackfriars tube get a white blob or a blue blob?
