I have nothing to contribute in regards to your question, only a pedantic comment that the title should say NYCT (New York City Transit) Mod edit: Fixed. Perhaps a PM to the OP next time would be more appropriate? Thanks for your post of 29 April. If you have nothing to add -then why bother to post this? I would have thought that anyone interested in the subject would know that "New York Subway" and "NYCT" both refer to the same thing in this case

Try " L O R A M rail grinder subway train transfer action " posted by Dj Hammers . This leads to several similar items -also check "Garbage trains" and " Transfer trips" etc: There is one item whch shows an engineers train topped and tailed by two locos working on diesel power with heavy exhaust smoke runnning throgh a station during passenger hours. Hope this helps B M

Looking at youtube "Motormans viewpoint views" on the New York subway, there are several items showing a rail grinding unit being hauled/propelled by a diesel loco at various locations. The actual vehicles of the grinding section which have a cab at the outer end look approx: the same size as our tube stock.Any comments about this?

Will that keep the Kennington Loop ghost out of the NLE? Come to think of it, has anyone ever seen the ghost? Depends if they're symbols from the same religion as the ghost. The " Kennington Ghost" may be the effect of steam arising from recent urinations shortly before being seen.

Anyone who has early "Underground News" magazines can probably find an article called "A rough ride over Putney Bridge" by Brian Prigmore which explains about the changeover section. Cant remember which issue but will try to look back when able.

Most of these posts are inaccurate speculation. all anyone who has not studied the history of the area properly has to do is to refer to " Building Londons underground" by Anthony Baddesley-Ellis . This explains it al very thorouhly. The new eastbound platform at K X met was built in the un-used Euston extension of the widened lines with a cnnection at Chalton st: junction. This connection was used as a relief line joining the E B widened lines and was altered to re-join the E B Circle line instead. The "mysterious void " at the west end is merely the continuation for a few yards of the tunnel towards Euston parallel to the Met tunnel before work on it stopped. The west facing curve at York Rd: is the old Maiden lane tunnel which now finishes at a door adjacent to the old Hotel curve junc: on the Thameslink tunnel The top end branches off the York curve around the Caledon st: area. These tunnels are floored with concrete as an emergency walking routr from the old Thameslink station.(exit to platform 0 in the mainline station near the old York Rd. platform.) A member of Thameslink staff very kindly accompanied me on a walk around the complex last year.

I think the tracks were removed by two scruffy individuals in a beat-up 1970's transit open-backed truck. (also containing two old central heating radiators and a scrap washing machine)

Slightly off topic but if the usual short-sightedness and penny-pinching attitude (as usual)had not prevailed the District line could havew served Heathrow for the sake of slightly larger tunnels. The distance from Hounslow west is not great antd this would have had benefits of larger stock with more luggage space etc: There was no reason that in this case the Picc: line could not have run there as well.

So they should be. if some people had their way Tfl's H Q would probably be on an obscure industrial estate in Neasden or similar, purely for instant money regardless of heritage etc.

The Harold Wilson era was particularly like this with "pipe and slippers- father knows best" complacent attitude. That team stopped the first channel tunnel scheme after quite a lot of money gad been wasted on it.

I used to use '38 stock every morning from Charing cross (embankment) to Stockwell in the late 1940's. At the time it seemed to reach tremendous speed between Waterloo an Kennington but was really only about 25/30mph.
