I would love to go on some of those tours! There's some good ones there. Unfortunately I'm short of money at the moment and I'm saving up for my driving lessons and PhD fees.

I've just been re-reading "Nortrhern Wastes" - interesting pictures of the unfinished Northern Line platforms at Finsbury Park, above where the bus staion now is. See also Jay Foreman's informative (and highly entertaining) video I love that video. It's really funny I'm actually quite interested in the Northern Heights plan and unfinished tube lines and what could have been. Wonder if there's ever a chance those lines might be built again?

I still have a Windows XP machine, it proved useful when (now-former) HWMBO discovered a box of 3½" floppy discs when clearing his teenage bedroom prior to his parents moving house. The discs were simply labelled "1" "2" "3" et cetera and having waited 20mins for the machine to boot we discovered that (as expected) the contents of the discs was something not suitable for this forum! That must have been mortifying Did you say anything to them about what you found on the discs?

And many are isolated from networks, so security risks are less of a concern. I still have about a dozen NT4 or W2k machines in use and one running a flavour of DOS. I often think they belong in a museum! I think they do belong in a museum! If they're old enough to belong in one, they're old fossils. I have a Windows XP machine at home I need to get rid of. The university I go to has a computer museum which sometimes opens to the public. You could always donate your old fossils to them I was up there last year for a retro games night and I was playing on an old Mac and someone said to me'you should get one of those, 400 euro on eBay, better than the modern rubbish!'

They probably running windows 98 still and they got the blue screen of death and the computer said nooo I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. I've heard of companies still using old systems. I've read before that Paris Orly airport's ATC still has Windows 3.1! My local hospital still had some Windows XP computers a couple of years ago and I've seen cash machines running NT4.

Is there a CrossRail / Elizabeth Line one yet? Considering the core is not yet completed, and no trains have run through end-to-end under the final configuration, I'll let you answer that one... ;-) I guess that means there isn't one They might film one after the line opens.

How are they dated? Is it because they were filmed in the late 90s?

That's crazy! Mine doesn't publicly advertise the Netflix ban, but I was at a society meeting where they were showing s film and they couldnt use it. As for Steam, I have seen students use it to play games but they might be playing offline, but it is impossible to download over it. Never heard any problems about getting research data over it. We used to have problems with Facebook and Bebo in the computer suites. What is your field of study? In danger of drifting off topic... biology / medicine. I used the general network to download these videos and they came down inside of a couple of minutes each, but we need to move ~4TB a day from our instrumentation to a new storage unit. People generally throw it onto a portable hard drive and walk - it's quicker. Interesting. My field is law. Did you download all the videos or just the tube one? I'll probably watch it when I have more free time.

It's a university in Ireland. Why?? Just that we can't get any serious research data in or out of ours (over the network) because they reserve 90% of the bandwidth for the student wi-fi because (and I quote) "the students have an expectation to be able to relax and do things like stream Netflix in-between lectures". We have to resort to carrying flight cases full of external hard drives to our collaborators. That's crazy! Downloaded the Northern line one a couple of weeks ago, but haven't had time to watch it yet. The file is over 1GB so make sure you're using a decent connection to download it (eg home wifi) and not over a public or mobile network. It's also better to use a desktop or laptop to download it rather than a mobile device. I downloaded it over my university's wifi, which was a bit slow as my college throttles the wifi (they block Netflix and Steam on campus to stop people streaming films or downloading games) but it was doable.

There's a faithful remake/clone of original Transport Tycoon that was expanded and adapted to modern computers - it is called OpenTTD and it is amazing. I've seen that advertised before. Looks good. They don't have a Mac version but I dual boot with Windows 7 so I could try it on there when I'm not so busy. I haven't played the original since I was about 11 or 12.

Love this game but it can get very addictive! I end up getting no work done when playing it. I bought this last night and am now addicted to it! This is exactly why I have not started playing it, and have refrained from reinstalling such programmes as Minecraft and Transport Tycoon! I used to play Transport Tycoon when I was younger. I also played stuff like RollerCoaster Tycoon and Theme Hospital. They remade Transport Tycoon for mobile but I won't download it. I'll end up playing it instead of studying! BTW how did you do multi quote?

I'd really love to see this now! Have you any pics or is it possible to scan it for us to see? I don't have any pics at the moment. The link I linked to is to the TfL site. If you can masquerade as a 3-yr old, I'm sure TfL will send you one... If it's possible to put pics on here without a needing a flickr etc account, then I'll try and get some up, but won't be for a bit I'm afraid. Ah ok. Haha I dont think I'll go that far! I dont think I would be able to! No worries about that. Whenever you get round to it. While on this topic... I have some other corkers. I saw online these worksheets which are used by teachers in schools and there were some on the LU. All well and good, but I saw a few which got their facts wrong. I saw one which referred to the Bakerloo line being the first underground line 😣😠I would post a link but I'm on mobile. How do they get things wrong? 🤔

While we're on the topic, I also found this: librarymice.com/dog-detectives-lost-in-london/ it's a childrens storybook set in London and there's an LU illustration on it. If you look at it you can see the station is Camden Town but they use 1972TS (were they used on the Northern line at one stage?) and the escalators go directly to the platform! I thought it looked unusual

The western Northern line will likely have its own name: the most rational option in my opinion is the lilac-coloured Hampstead line, after the Hampstead Tube. The eastern one would likely keep the old name for ease of recognition. I don't think that will happen. It would cost a fortune to change the name of that section of the Northern line. It's not as simple in real life as just changing the colour and name on the map. I think the Northern line should be kept as one or like what the OP has done, split it in two but keep the name. Thats the best way to manage it IMO. I actually have been running a Twitter campaign to keep the Northern line as one, but I havent updated the account lately. It's @foreveroneline for anyone on Twitter. It's separate from my main account

Speaking of German projects ended by reunification, has anyone here ever heard of the M-Bahn project in West Berlin? Not suggesting that for Croxley, mind... I haven't heard of it, but I do know there were restrictions on the Berlin U-Bahn pre-reunification (people couldn't use it to travel east-west). There is a map of Berlin in my German book (I do night classes in German at my college) but it doesn't mention the M-Bahn. What exactly is it?

Will that keep the Kennington Loop ghost out of the NLE? Come to think of it, has anyone ever seen the ghost? Depends if they're symbols from the same religion as the ghost. True, but do we know what religion the ghost is, if any?

What's the need for the shutters? Doused in holy water and daubed with religious symbols. They're a ghost containment feature. Will that keep the Kennington Loop ghost out of the NLE? Come to think of it, has anyone ever seen the ghost?

If it was distributed to stations early and a few lucky people picked up a copy it could be a rare edition. I bet copies of it will go for a lot of money on eBay eventually! Which map is currently available in stations? I'm nowhere near one so can't check.

Exactly But if it should be compulsory, how would you get people to watch it? Send them the link to it and make sure they look at it or stand over them while they're watching it? Or share it on social media? Happy New Year I'm beginning to get a headache, and I haven't touched a drop yet! ;)Have screens on the platforms, free DVDs,run the commentary on the trains instead of:"The next station is..........."(Where's that scotch?) Oh dear. Sorry about that! I like your way of thinking Make sure it gets through, as long as they pay attention. That could be a bit of a problem. It's like when lecturers try to keep students interested in what they are talking about. Some of mine make it mandatory to attend classes. Don't drink too many!

I've just watched it. Certainly an interesting video. I was fascinated by escalators as a kid. I used to go to a shopping centre which had and still has a long transparent one and when I was about 7 or 8 I used to stand and watch it go up. I don't know why I found them so interesting. Do you mean it should be compulsive or compulsory viewing for people? Yes teacher, it shoulf be compulsory! HNY Exactly But if it should be compulsory, how would you get people to watch it? Not directly related to the upgrade, but Londonist have published a video showing behind the scenes of the escalators and refurbishment works to escalators at Holborn. A very interesting and instructive video. Should be compulsive viewing for all those travellers who complain about the 'inconvenience' they have to put up with. I've just watched it. There were escalator works at Holborn last time I was there...I can't remember if that's still ongoing though. Holborn is set to remain exit and interchange only (06:30 to 10:00 Mon to Fri) until the end of February 2018. Is that because of the escalator works?
