Thanks for the update - but weren't the S Stock supposed to be 70mph units?

SouthWestTrains Desiros have an automated "Please take your feet off the seats" (or something to that effect. You hear it so rarely, and the way the announcement is said with force, that it's potentially triggered by the guard watching the CCTV.

BBC London news had a bit on it last night - they showed Ken performing an opening because, he said, Boris couldn't be bothered to turn up on a day when plenty of people would be there to celebrate (or something to that effect).

I have a friend who baulked at me paying for a Travelcard - she jokes with me about her 'free bus service'. She's commuted for 2 years now and not once been caught - she wasn't happy when I told her they were to be phased out! Not sure about Tramlink but doesn't the DLR have a ticket checker on every train? That's quite a contrast to the free bendy buses.

Richard Parry, Director of Strategy and Service Development, re-iterated last night in his answer to question 61 that the "new signalling system, to be ready from the end of 2009, will mean more and faster trains and a more reliable service". ;D The url is here www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/corporate/media/questiontime/see-answers.aspx

Don't hold your breath,it's well behind schedule and apparently over budget already. What a shame - I get fed up with the Jubilee line nudgers (the drivers that don't have confidence to stop from a decent speed where there are PEDs). There is a strong response to criticism of the signalling in the new RAIL issue from George ClarkEngineering Manager, Tube Lines. It makes no mention of any delays and neatly sidesteps argument on this by stating "... wrongly anticipates problems on the Jubilee line when it upgrade is complete"

Admittedly 92 stock aren't very well made at all, but I still maintain that in terms of saloon design they are the best of all the tube stocks currently in service. Totally agree on that, they seem far less cramped than the 95/96 stock. Add to that their impressive acceleration/deceleration and frequency of service which all go to making the Central my favourite deep level line.

Perhaps though it would be better not to have blind people totally relying on potentially incorrect information. Whilst the tube is generally accurate, the brand new iBus spends half its time switched off, announcing the next bus stop before its reached the previous one, announcing random bus stops and announcing the destination as the one for the opposite direction!

Those systems were on the trains when intoduced into service around 15 years ago. ISTBC but I've noticed a few new displays (not commissioned) hanging from the ceiling over the vestibule areas rather than at carriage ends. I wonder if a new system is being installed hence little has been done to the original system.

Isn't Liverpool Street also the only one with this display that doesn't align correctly?

There's a great article on the ATO fit work in the current RAIL magazine - amazing to see the amount of re-wiring going on

I've noticed that each Metronet station that gets done usually receives the announcement. After a period of a few weeks it seems to then be permanently turned off at stations where it isn't appropriate. I'm guessing that the contractors have to fully commission the system and then the station staff configure it appropriately

Well, the old Eurostar connection IC125 services from Manchester used to run into Waterloo. I believe only short wheel based Mark III coaches could travel over third rail track although this rule was convieniently forgotten at Watford Junction.

I had a few thoughts about the display, positives are 1) It's possible to mop right under the seats so there's shouldn't be a build up of muck 2) I thought the door closing movement was strong and fast enough to put off 'door holders' 3) The inter-connecting gangway is great Negatives 1) Having the massive doors open at every station is going to be cold for those travelling on lightly used services in winter (40 seconds is quite a lot of wind chill!) - since National Rail passengers seem to cope fine why not make use of those buttons when the train is above ground 2) Did anyone else notice the way out of date (Special fares apply) Metropolitan line maps? 3) The door closing alarm just didn't say 'doors closing' to me at all. In fact I was so unaware of what the sound meant, the doors closed on me once! I think the current A stock alarm is pretty universal and well known. SWT have a digitised version on their 444s + 450s.
